Giving Voice to Differences and Strengthening Connections

  • Welcome to our learning platform exploring new forms of problem-solving and community-building. The Deliberative Communication Clinic at Wayne State University is an experiment in online communication and capacity building and we are glad you are here.

The site is hosted on our emerging technology Xserve run by the Master of Arts in Dispute Resolution (MADR) program. MADR is part of the Department of Communication within the College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts, opening up all sorts of possibilities for collaboration with communications and journalism faculty, media studies and public relations professionals, visual arts and movement experts and forensic practitioners.

In addition to this Moodle-based learning forum, we maintain a unique dialogue platform known as Unchat permitting us to explore online forms of communication grounded in principles of strong democracy and service learning. Our Unchat platform offers forums where up to 40 people can meet in real-time to converse and problem-solve or build a shared body of knowledge.

We hope you join in as way opens for you.

    Sincerely,
    Bill Warters

Our site, the Deliberative Communication Clinic (i.e., "Dee Cee Squared") Open Learning Forum, uses an open-source course management software known as Moodle (see http://moodle.org) that is full of useful features including topical forums, chat tools, quiz builders, structured lessons, and many other collaborative learning "modules".

Moodle provides us with a flexible workspace for trying out innovative forms of communication and provides for quick bug fixes and new feature additions. Moodlers help keep Blackboard/WebCT developers on their toes by promoting friendly competition over quality and features.

WSU colleagues can contact project coordinator Bill Warters (993-7482) if you want to discuss setting up your own workshop or forum.
